Cursive numbers 0–9 on handwriting lines · tap any number below for its full guide
Cursive numbers are the digits 0 to 9 written with the same right-hand slant and smooth flow as cursive letters. They come from the Hindu–Arabic numeral system, so their shapes stay close to printed numbers — what changes is the slant, where each stroke starts and the order you write it in. Get these right and your dates, prices, math work and addresses will match the rest of your handwriting.
This hub has a step-by-step guide for every digit, number words from zero to one hundred in cursive, free printable charts (0–9, 1–20 and 1–100) and a short practice plan for kids and adults.
Step by stepHow to Write Each Cursive Number (0–9)
Every guide covers stroke order, common mistakes, style variations and a free tracing worksheet. Start with the easy ones if you are new.
Cursive Numbers vs Printed Numbers
Many people expect cursive digits to look completely different from print. They don’t — the differences are small but they matter for neat, consistent handwriting.
Slant
1 4 7Cursive numbers lean slightly right, at the same angle as your letters.
Flow

Learn Cursive Numbers in Families
Handwriting teachers group digits by the movement they share. Practicing one family at a time builds muscle memory faster than going from 0 to 9 in order.
| Family | Digits | Shared movement |
|---|---|---|
| Straight-line | 1 4 7 | Start at the top and pull straight, slanted lines down |
| Curve-right | 2 3 5 | Curves that bulge out to the right |
| Counter-clockwise | 0 6 8 9 | Move left first, then down and around — the same motion as cursive a, c, d and g |
Number Words in Cursive (Zero to One Hundred)
Writing numbers as words is just as important — on checks, invitations, worksheets and formal letters. Unlike digits, number words are joined letter to letter. Practice the first twenty, then the tens.
| Digit | Word | In cursive | Digit | Word | In cursive |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | zero | zero | 11 | eleven | eleven |
| 1 | one | one | 12 | twelve | twelve |
| 2 | two | two | 13 | thirteen | thirteen |
| 3 | three | three | 14 | fourteen | fourteen |
| 4 | four | four | 15 | fifteen | fifteen |
| 5 | five | five | 16 | sixteen | sixteen |
| 6 | six | six | 17 | seventeen | seventeen |
| 7 | seven | seven | 18 | eighteen | eighteen |
| 8 | eight | eight | 19 | nineteen | nineteen |
| 9 | nine | nine | 20 | twenty | twenty |
| 10 | ten | ten | 100 | one hundred | one hundred |
The tens: thirty · forty · fifty · sixty · seventy · eighty · ninety. Note the spelling of forty (no “u”). For numbers like 45, write the tens word, a hyphen, then the ones word: forty-five.

Cursive Numbers That Are Easy to Confuse
| Pair | How to keep them apart |
|---|---|
| 1 · 7 | Keep any flag on the 1 short — or cross your 7, as most of Europe does. |
| 4 · 9 | Write the 4 with an open top. |

| 6 · 0 | Give the 6 a tall stem and keep its loop in the lower half. |
| 3 · 8 | Leave both curves of the 3 open on the left. |
| 2 · Z | Round the top of the 2 and keep its base flat. |
5-Day Practice Plan for Cursive Numbers
About 10 minutes a day is enough. The plan works for children learning cursive and for adults improving their handwriting.
- Straight-line family: trace and write 1, 4 and 7. Check that all three slant the same way.
- Counter-clockwise family: practice 0, 6, 8 and 9. Start every one moving to the left.
- Curve-right family: work on 2, 3 and 5. Say “body, then hat” for the 5.
- Mixed numbers: write 10–20 and today’s date, then the same numbers as words.
- Real life: write your phone number, a price list and a short shopping list with quantities. Compare with the 0–9 chart.
Cursive Numbers: Frequently Asked Questions
What are cursive numbers?
Cursive numbers are the digits 0–9 written with the slant and smooth strokes of cursive handwriting. Their shapes are close to printed numbers, but they lean to the right and follow set stroke orders.
Are cursive numbers different from regular numbers?
Only slightly. The basic shapes are the same; cursive numbers mainly differ in slant and stroke flow. A few digits — 1, 4 and 7 — have common style variations, such as a flagged 1, an open 4 or a crossed 7.
Which cursive numbers are hardest to learn?
Most learners find 3, 5 and 8 the trickiest. The 3 needs a controlled turn in the middle, the 5 needs two strokes, and the 8 is one continuous crossing stroke.
Do you join cursive numbers together?
No. Digits are written separately with small, even spaces, even inside a cursive sentence. Number words such as “seven” are joined like any other cursive word.
How do you write numbers in words in cursive?
Write them like any cursive word, joining each letter. For compound numbers from 21 to 99, use a hyphen between the tens and the ones, for example forty-five.
When should children learn cursive numbers?
Usually alongside or soon after the cursive alphabet, often in 2nd or 3rd grade. Because number strokes match letter strokes, the switch is quick.
Are the cursive number charts and worksheets free?
Yes. The 0–9 chart, the 1–20 worksheet, the 1–100 chart and every single-number worksheet are free to download and print.
