Cursive 2: How to Write Two in Cursive
2
2 in cursive · 1 (no pencil lift) · free tracing worksheet
Cursive 2 is the number two written with a smooth curved neck, a slanted diagonal and a base that is either flat or finished with a small loop. It is one of the most expressive digits in handwriting. Learn the clean, readable version step by step below.
The two we write today grew out of two horizontal strokes joined by a quick diagonal, a story you can follow in the history of the number 2. Fast handwriting turned those strokes into one continuous curve, and that curve is the heart of cursive 2. Many traditional styles also add a small loop where the diagonal meets the base. It is optional, but it shows clearly how cursive 2 is built from one flowing movement instead of separate lines.

How to Write 2 in Cursive Step by Step
- Curve Over the Top: Start a little below the top line on the left. Curve up, over and down to the right, like the top half of a question mark, keeping the curve full and round.
- Sweep Down the Diagonal: Without lifting, continue down and to the left in a long diagonal until you reach the baseline at the far left side of the digit.
- Finish the Base: Make a small loop at the corner if you like the traditional style, then pull the base along the baseline to the right and lift the pencil.
Try both versions of the base, plain and looped, and keep the one that feels most natural. The looped base is common in American school cursive and looks elegant in dates and on cards; the plain base is faster and very clear on forms. Either way, the neck should be the widest part of the digit.

Cursive 2 Tracing Sheet (PDF)
The cursive 2 tracing sheet fits on one US Letter page and prints cleanly in black and white. It starts with a large model of the digit and a numbered arrow that shows where the pen begins, then a row of 2s that fade from solid to light gray, a row of dotted 2s to trace, blank handwriting lines, and two rows of the word “Two” to copy and trace.
Use it in three passes: trace the dotted row, copy the digit on the blank lines without tracing, then write 2 in cursive from memory. The dashed midline shows where the curves should turn, so keep an eye on it while you work.

Cursive 2 vs Print 2
A printed 2 often has a sharper, almost angular neck and a perfectly flat base drawn as a separate idea. Cursive 2 rounds the neck, leans the diagonal and runs the whole digit as one stroke, sometimes with a small loop at the bottom corner.
The main risk with cursive 2 is confusion with a cursive capital Q or a Z. A neck that is too small or a diagonal that is too steep makes the shape ambiguous. Keep the top curve generous, the diagonal clearly slanted and the base long enough to support the digit, and cursive 2 stays readable even at speed.
Avoid mix-upsCommon Mistakes With Cursive 2
| Mistake | How to fix it |
|---|---|
| Making the neck too small | A tiny top curve makes cursive 2 look like a Z. Let the neck fill the top half of the digit. |
| A diagonal that is too upright | A steep diagonal pinches the digit. Lean it so the base starts well to the left. |
| A base that floats | The base must sit on the baseline. A floating base makes rows of numbers look uneven. |
| An oversized base loop | If you use the loop, keep it small. A large loop can turn the digit into a decorative letter. |
| Lifting the pencil midway | Cursive 2 is one stroke. Lifting between the neck and the diagonal leaves a visible break. |
Variations of Cursive 2
Some writers add a small decorative loop at the bottom left. It looks elegant on invitations, but in math or forms a plain base is clearer.
Beyond digitsHow to Write Two in Cursive
The word “two” contains one of the trickiest joins in cursive: the w ends high at the midline, so the o must be joined from the top rather than from the baseline. The t is crossed after the word is finished. Write the word slowly a few times, paying attention to that high bridge between w and o.
If any letter in these words feels unfamiliar, practice it first in the cursive alphabet guides, then come back to the full word.
Everyday uses2 in Cursive: Dates, Times and Prices
Two appears in every year of this century, in dates like the 2nd or the 22nd, in prices like $2.25 and in times like 2:20. It is often the first digit of a year, so a tidy cursive 2 makes every handwritten date look neater.

In years such as 2026 the 2 and the 0 sit side by side, so make sure their heights match. If you use the looped base, keep it small enough that it does not crowd the next digit. To preview any date or amount in several cursive styles before writing it by hand, type it into our cursive generator.
10 minutes a day10-Minute Practice Routine for Cursive 2
Ten focused minutes a day for one week is enough to make cursive 2 feel automatic. Use the worksheet above or a lined notebook, and keep the pace slow until the shape is steady.
- Warm-up (2 minutes): write a row of relaxed S-curves, then a row of question-mark tops, keeping each curve the same size.
- Trace (2 minutes): trace one full row of dotted 2s on the worksheet, starting every digit at the top line.
- Copy (3 minutes): write the digit on blank lines beside the model, checking height and slant after every three or four digits.
- Use it (2 minutes): write the word “two” and a few real numbers that contain 2, such as 12, 22, 200 and 2026.
- Check (1 minute): compare your last row with your first. Are the necks round and the same size? Does every base sit on the baseline? If the base floats above the line, slow the diagonal.
Teaching Cursive 2 to Children
Children usually find it easiest to learn cursive 2 after they can print the digit confidently. Show the movement slowly first, then let the child trace the dotted digits on the worksheet with a finger before using a pencil. Keep each session short and finish while the child is still enjoying it.
Praise the right things: a start at the top line, a steady slant and a digit that sits on the baseline. Those three habits matter more than perfect curves, and once they are in place the shape improves on its own. Adults can follow the same order, simply moving through it faster.

Cursive 2 shares its top curve with 3, so practice the two digits together once the shape feels steady. The difference is what happens after the neck: a diagonal for 2, a second curve for 3. The chart below shows all ten digits side by side, so you can check that your 2 matches the height and slant of its neighbors.

Cursive 2: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you write 2 in cursive?
Start below the top line, curve over and down to the right, sweep a diagonal down to the left until you reach the baseline, then pull the base to the right. Cursive 2 is one continuous stroke.
Does cursive 2 have a loop at the bottom?
It can. Many school styles add a small loop where the diagonal meets the base, but a plain flat base is also correct. Choose one style and use it consistently.
Why does my cursive 2 look like a Z?
Usually because the top curve is too small or too sharp. Make the neck round and generous, and lean the diagonal gently rather than drawing it straight.
Is cursive 2 hard to learn?
It takes a little more practice than 0 or 1 because the stroke changes direction three times. Most learners have a neat cursive 2 after two or three short sessions.
How do you write the word two in cursive?
Write a cursive t, join it to the w, then bridge from the top of the w into the o at the midline. Cross the t after the word is finished.
Do numbers join in cursive?
No. Even in years like 2022, each digit is written separately. Only letters connect in cursive writing.
