Cursive 9: How to Write Nine in Cursive

9

9 in cursive · 1 (no pencil lift) · free tracing worksheet

Cursive 9 is the number nine written as a small round head at the top with a long, slightly slanted stem running down to the baseline. It flows in one stroke, much like the cursive letter g without its loop. Learn the clean, readable shape step by step below.

Nine is closely related in form to six, and over the centuries both settled into a loop with a tail, as the history of the number 9 describes. In cursive 9 the loop sits at the top and the tail becomes a long stem. The stem is usually straight, though some writers give it a gentle curve at the bottom. Either way, the round head and long stem are what separate a nine from a four, a g or an inverted six.

How to Write 9 in Cursive Step by Step

Before you start: Sit with both feet flat and tilt the paper slightly to the left if you are right-handed, or slightly to the right if you are left-handed. Hold the pencil loosely, about two finger-widths above the tip, so the curves stay smooth instead of shaky. The head of cursive 9 is the same small oval used in the letters a, d and g. If you have practiced those letters, you already know the movement; if not, draw a row of small closed ovals first, each one starting at the top and moving to the left.
  1. Draw the Head: Start just below the top line on the right. Curve to the left, down and around, closing a small oval in the top half of the digit.
  2. Return to the Top: Without lifting, travel back up to the top right of the oval so the stem can start from the same point.
  3. Pull Down the Stem: Pull a long, straight stem down to the baseline, leaning gently to the right. Lift the pencil on the baseline, or add a slight curve to the left if you prefer.

The head should fill roughly the top half of the digit. A head that is too small makes the nine look like a q; one that is too large makes it look like a lowercase a. Keep it closed, keep it in the upper half, and let the stem do the rest.

Cursive 9 Tracing Sheet (PDF)

The cursive 9 tracing sheet fits on one US Letter page and prints cleanly in black and white. It starts with a large model of the digit and a numbered arrow that shows where the pen begins, then a row of 9s that fade from solid to light gray, a row of dotted 9s to trace, blank handwriting lines, and two rows of the word “Nine” to copy and trace.

Use it in three passes: trace the dotted row, copy the digit on the blank lines without tracing, then write 9 in cursive from memory. The dashed midline shows where the curves should turn, so keep an eye on it while you work.

What changes

A printed 9 often has a perfectly round circle on top of a straight vertical stem. Cursive 9 makes the head a slanted oval, connects head and stem in one stroke, and leans the stem to match the rest of the handwriting.

The usual confusion is with a 4 or a lowercase g. A closed, round head separates it from an open-top 4; a stem that stays above the baseline separates it from a g, whose loop drops below. Keep the stem on the baseline and the head closed, and cursive 9 is easy to read.

Avoid mix-ups

Common Mistakes With Cursive 9

MistakeHow to fix it
Leaving the head openAn open head looks like a 4 or a u. Close the oval completely.
Dropping the stem below the baselineA stem that runs below the line makes cursive 9 look like a letter g. Stop on the baseline.
A head that is too largeIf the head fills more than half the digit, the nine reads as an a. Keep it in the top half.
A curved, wavy stemA slight curve at the end is fine, but a wavy stem looks unsteady. Keep it mostly straight.
Starting with the stemStarting at the bottom makes the head hard to close. Always begin with the oval at the top.

Variations of Cursive 9

Some writers curve the stem slightly to the left at the bottom; others keep it straight. A straight stem is clearer in math and forms.

Beyond digits

How to Write Nine in Cursive

The word “nine” is a gentle joining exercise made entirely of small letters, which makes it ideal for practicing even size and spacing. The two n letters should be the same width, the i is dotted after the word is finished, and the e ends with a small exit stroke on the baseline.

Everyday uses

9 in Cursive: Dates, Times and Prices

Nine appears in dates such as the 9th or the 19th, in times like 9:09, in prices such as $9.99, which is everywhere on shop labels, and in years like 2029. Because $9.99 is so common, a tidy cursive 9 is useful for anyone writing price tags or menus.

In numbers like 99 or 909, keep each head the same size and every stem on the baseline. Uneven nines are the reason many handwritten prices look rushed. To preview any date or amount in several cursive styles before writing it by hand, type it into our cursive generator.

10 minutes a day

10-Minute Practice Routine for Cursive 9

Ten focused minutes a day for one week is enough to make cursive 9 feel automatic. Use the worksheet above or a lined notebook, and keep the pace slow until the shape is steady.

  1. Warm-up (2 minutes): draw a row of small closed ovals, then add a long slanted stem to the right side of each one.
  2. Trace (2 minutes): trace one full row of dotted 9s on the worksheet, starting every digit at the top line.
  3. Copy (3 minutes): write the digit on blank lines beside the model, checking height and slant after every three or four digits.
  4. Use it (2 minutes): write the word “nine” and a few real numbers that contain 9, such as 19, 99, 900 and 2029.
  5. Check (1 minute): compare your last row with your first. Are all the heads closed and the same size? Do all the stems stop on the baseline and lean the same way?

Teaching Cursive 9 to Children

Children usually find it easiest to learn cursive 9 after they can print the digit confidently. Show the movement slowly first, then let the child trace the dotted digits on the worksheet with a finger before using a pencil. Keep each session short and finish while the child is still enjoying it.

Praise the right things: a start at the top line, a steady slant and a digit that sits on the baseline. Those three habits matter more than perfect curves, and once they are in place the shape improves on its own. Adults can follow the same order, simply moving through it faster.

Practice Cursive 9 With the Other Numbers

Cursive 9 is the mirror movement of 6 and shares its oval with 0 and 8. Practice it beside 4 and 7 as well, so the long straight stems of all three match. The chart below shows all ten digits side by side, so you can check that your 9 matches the height and slant of its neighbors.

Your questions

Cursive 9: Frequently Asked Questions

How do you write 9 in cursive?

Start below the top line on the right, curve left and around to close a small oval, return to the top of the oval, then pull a long slanted stem down to the baseline. Cursive 9 is one continuous stroke.

Does cursive 9 go below the line?

Not in standard school style. The stem stops on the baseline, which keeps the nine different from a cursive g.

Why does my cursive 9 look like a 4?

The head is probably open. Close the oval at the top completely and keep it round.

How is cursive 9 different from cursive g?

The g has a lower loop that drops below the baseline and joins the next letter. Cursive 9 has a straight stem that stops on the baseline and stands alone.

How do you write the word nine in cursive?

Write n, i, n and e as one connected word, keeping the two n letters the same width. Dot the i once the word is finished.

Is cursive 9 easy to learn?

Yes. If you can write a small closed oval, you can write cursive 9. Most learners need only one short session to make it neat.
